ABOUT US

Meet the family

Phumula Okinawa
Greetings from Okinawa!
We’re the proud owners of Phumula Okinawa and live right here on the property alongside our two guesthouses.
Shiro is a local Okinawan, and Kirsten hails from South Africa. Together, we live with our twin daughters and our lively dog, Frankie!
Phumula Okinawa is part of Izumi Mango Orchard—a family-run farm that’s been growing mango since 1988.
We speak both English and Japanese and truly enjoy connecting with new guests as well as catching up with old friends.
If you’re curious about local attractions, coming to visit Junglia or the Aquarium, discovering hidden gems, or trying delicious nearby eateries, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.
We also host a weekly Saturday night Christian gathering, open to anyone who’s interested. Let us know, and you’ll be warmly welcomed.
Thank you for your interest in our guesthouse and farm. We’d be delighted to host you!
Phumula Guest Cottage opened in February 2019, born from a vision shaped by resilience and hope. After typhoon winds destroyed two large mango houses in 2018, we chose to breathe new life into our old mango packing room—transforming it into a haven for rest and renewal.
Shiro’s mother often said, “This place is not only for farming, but for tired people to rest, rejuvenate, and receive creative ideas from God.” Her words became our mission. As the owners, Shiro and Kirsten, we now carry that dream forward—creating a space where guests can truly unwind, connect with nature, and leave feeling restored.
The name “Phumula,” from the Zulu language of Kirsten’s homeland, South Africa, means “come and rest.”
If you’re longing for quiet moments, fresh air, and the gentle embrace of greenery, we warmly invite you to stay at Phumula Okinawa.
